I was working away last Friday night and a happy smiley face approached the DJ Box and said “I read your Music Box every week and we loved it when you mentioned SL2 – On A Ragga Tip because we all sing it whenever we’re driving to Budaiya!”.

If you’re not sure why Rob and his crew do this it’s because the song features words very similar to a popular part of western Bahrain – and, of course, now I’ve got the song stuck in my head, along with with loads of fun memories of my time working in Ibiza back in the early 90s.

It’s nice to know people do actually read this little segment from time to time and that they take notice of the songs that appear each week. As every professional DJ will agree, you tend to create little set lists of songs in your head that you know will go together smoothly and create atmosphere wherever you are working – whether it is dance, R&B, old music, etc, the method remains the same. Therefore, when a customer pops up with that predictable request a DJ will have five or six more songs that can fit in either side to keep the entertainment flowing.

So if Rob had popped up with that song request you could do something like this:

SL2 – On A Ragga Tip
Baby D – Let Me Be Your Fantasy
Fragma – Toca’s Miracle
Tori Amos – Professional Widow
Underdog Project – Summer Jam
Alice Deejay – Back In My Life
Gala – Freed From Desire
Corona – Rhythm Of The Night
LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem

The last song takes the music nicely from the 1990s into more recent times, and from there the DJ can either play more dance music or change to a different style quite easily.

I hope some of these tunes have brought back even more memories and until next week, remember this – rental cars are the only true ‘all terrain vehicle’.
