Gulf Weekly Shuttlers set for challenge

Prize money of $2,250 is up for grabs in the Travelex-Western Union Indian Club GCC Open Badminton Tournament, which is being held at the club’s premises from today to Friday.

More than 85 players from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Bahrain will be seen in action at the club’s two courts with Bahrain’s star player Jaffer Ebrahim, pictured below, headlining the action.

Compatriot Heri Setiawan is seeded number two for the tournament.

Saudi Arabia will be represented by nine players, with five coming from the UAE and four from Qatar.

Ebrahim won the GCC Open the last time that the club staged the competition in 2007. The event was a very successful one for Bahrain as its shuttlers bagged trophies in all but one of the six categories.

The organisers are confident that Bahrain will add the men’s doubles title this year to their kitty.

This time round the tournament has added three new categories for a total of seven – men’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, veteran’s doubles, boys under-19 singles, boys under-19 doubles and girls under-19 doubles. The notable ones missing are the women’s singles and doubles due to a lack of entries.

The draw for the tournament was put up at the club last night and also emailed to the players.

Apart from Travelex, the other sponsors include Almarai, Al Mahroos, Mark Seven Advertising and Ehsan Optics among others.
