Fifty photographs taken by amateur snappers highlighting ‘Beautiful Bahrain’ will be showcased at a three-day exhibition starting tomorrow at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS) in Segaiya, writes Anasuya Kesavan.
Landscapes, sea views, mosques, desert, beach life, night shots, portraits, Al Fateh mosque, dawn near the financial harbour, Bahraini flag framed in the rising sun and stormy nights at sea are just some of the images captured in both black and white and colour.
The photography competition and exhibition has been organised by BKS Photography Club in association with camera company Nikon.
The images have been selected from a pool of 389 entries received from more than 90 photographers across the kingdom. Saying that a picture is truly worth more than a thousand words, judge and convenor of the club, Saji Anthony, said: “There are many themes that photographers can immortalise through ‘Beautiful Bahrain’.
“We are delighted that we have been able to attract so many contestants from outside the club, including Bahrainis. As organisers we wanted to focus on the joys of Bahrain and use our images to showcase the kingdom’s beauty.”
The first selection was made based on the quality of images. Mr Anthony said: “We were looking for images that had an aesthetic appeal and pleasing colours which reflected a certain mood and, most importantly, were a good representation of Beautiful Bahrain.”
The final 50 entries are being judged by visiting award-winning photographers Anil Kumar K from India, and Bahrain-based Camille Zacharia and Phil Weymouth.
The winner will be awarded with a trophy and certificate. Visitors to the exhibition will also get a chance to win a Nikon digital camera through a raffle draw that will be held on the inauguration evening.
The event includes a photography techniques workshop by Mr Kumar who is known for his macro photography of wildlife and his commercial work that includes advertisements and major still life documentaries such as the Incredible India series. Mr Kumar will be conducting a workshop entitled Trial and Error for both members and non-members of the club on Friday and Saturday.
