By the time you lovely people get to read this then all eight places in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals will have been filled and the suspense increases. So, may I wish all the best to those teams that have qualified, and say ‘jolly bad luck, old chap’ to the eight teams that have missed out this time around. But I’m wondering if there isn’t a greater force at work here including fate, luck and of course ‘the jinx’.
The reason I bring this up is because at the wonderful little sports venue I work at, some regular Scottish fellows had been valiantly supporting Ireland through the 2012 campaign – but alas, after their second group match it made it impossible for the men in green to make the knock-out stages.
So, with a huge smile on their faces, the Scottish lads bravely turned up for the England match in Swedish shirts complete with horned Scandinavian helmets and even stumbled their way through the national anthem (just like every professional footballer, I suppose!).
Of course, we now know that England beat Sweden in an epic encounter, the result of which meant that Sweden were out of the competition – and so for the second time around, the team these guys were supporting failed to garnish a point, which brings me back to whether they have innocently jinxed whichever team colours they decide to wear.
So, let’s do some songs which fit this little dilemma:
Kylie Minogue – I Should Be So Lucky Creedence Clearwater Revival – Fortunate Son Wet Wet Wet – Wishing I Was Lucky Christina Aguilera – Blessed Madonna – Lucky Star Third Eye Blind – Semi Charmed Life
As I wrap up this edition hoping the standard of football continues till the final, let me leave you with this random thought: If you have trouble getting your children’s attention, just sit down and look comfortable.
