BEEFY bikers and leather-clad babes put on the pink style at the weekend to cruise across the island in a two-wheeled convoy in support of breast cancer awareness month.

The fourth annual Pink Awareness Ride, organised by the local Harley Owners Group (HOG), set off from in front of the Harley Davidson dealership in Budaiya.

More than 50 motorcyclists, men and women of all ages and numerous nationalities, joined the Harley parade with fully-kitted bikes and high-spirits to match. They set out at 8am for a trip around Bahrain, revving their engines loudly in harmony and were back at the dealership before midday.

Maria Hawkyard, HOG’s activity officer for the Bahrain Chapter, joined her fellow bikers on her 1200CC low sportster Harley and said: “The event went very well as it always does. Everybody made an effort to dress in pink and dress up their bikes as well.

“We want to give back to the community and we try to take part in at least one charity event a month. It is a fun day for all as we have a mixed group of bikers from Bahrain, Jordan, Egypt, US, the UK and New Zealand riding together in unity for a great cause.

“It also dispels the image that bikers are all bad people. Some of us are very nice and we like to give when we can. I’d also like to give praise to the girls of Think Pink Bahrain for all their hard work. Every year they seem so enthusiastic and they truly give it their all.”

The HOGs will still collect donations and proceeds from the merchandise they sell throughout the month to donate to the cause. They have so far raised BD450 for Think Pink Bahrain and handed over a cheque to the sum at the weekend.

Anita Ghavami, one of the founding members of the Think Pink Bahrain committee, said: “The HOG’s ride grows in popularity every year with more and more bikers taking part. The money raised will be used for our education work.”

Currently Think Pink Bahrain is funding two staff nurses from Salmaniya Medical Hospital through their masters of nursing programme at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB).

Think Pink Bahrain believes that education is a powerful tool in the campaign for promoting early detection of the disease, as well as finding new treatments and an eventual cure for breast cancer.

Shoppers are being encouraged to join Bahrain City Centre’s second Kick Up Your Heels walkathon.

A major success last year, the event is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer with all funds going towards Think Pink Bahrain.

The 3km walk will take place on Saturday at 8am and there is a maximum of 300 places for walkers.

Spaces are quickly filling up and GulfWeekly readers are encouraged to register at the main Customer Service Desk in the mall before the end of day tomorrow.

Registration costs just BD5 per person, and includes a ‘Kick Up Your Heels’ T-Shirt to wear on the day.

Money raised will support the purchase of international breast cancer books to support local universities and their related research in the field.

Participants are also encouraged to have friends and family members sponsor their walk in order to raise additional funds for the annual campaign.

The participant who raises the most funds will win a night’s stay for two courtesy of Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre, inclusive of breakfast and a single 60-minute spa treatment. Additionally, the walker with the most creative Think Pink costume for the walkathon will win a brunch-for-two at the hotel’s Savour restaurant.
