Jake Gyllenhaal is preparing to suit up as an officer of the law once again to star in the upcoming thriller Prisoners.

The 31-year-old Academy Award-nominated actor will star opposite Hugh Jackman in the murder mystery. It centres on a small-town carpenter (Jackman) who butts heads with a brazen detective (Gyllenhaal) after the former decides to take his daughter’s kidnapping case into his own hands.

The movie will see the actor team up with French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, whose acclaimed 2010 drama Incendies scored an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film, helming a script by Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband).

Villeneuve and the Prince of Persia actor have worked together on the film An Enemy where he is thought to have told Gyllenhaal about the project.

Gyllenhaal is currently starring in the police drama film End of Watch alongside Anna Kendrick, Michael Pena and America Ferrera. The film has already been released in the US and will hit theatres worldwide on November 23.

Prisoners is scheduled to enter production in early 2013 with distributor Warner Bros eyeing an autumn release of that year.
