Gulf Weekly Desert Divas dominate Young Gunners

Desert Divas picked up their first points of the season with a stunning 5-0 victory over last season’s champions Arsenal Junior Gunners.

The Young Gunners, with an average age of 13, and without inspirational coach Deena Rahman who was absent due to sickness, put up a brave fight against an experienced Divas side.

Lauren Moir made some superb saves in goal with Jen Loveland-Rose having another solid performance in defence. However, Divas dominance was too much for them to handle and two goals from Shauna Nearing and another brace from Anna Hansen, and one more by Suzanne McAillstar was more than enough to seal victory.

Divas delighted captain Shauna Nearing said: “The first half was pretty tight, the goals late in the half gave us a boost in confidence to really come out fighting in the second half for our first win.”

Other sides in the GulfWeekly-sponsored Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain Ladies League also bounced back into form.

Eastern Flames returned from defeat with a convincing 5-1 victory over Venus. Leah Montenegro, last season’s Player-of-the-League grabbed four of the goals with Wumme Andrews scoring the other. Venus replied through Mariam Al Khalifa.

Arsenal Red’s also came back to winning ways after a draw. They beat Joga TFA 4-1 with two goals apiece from Reema Alqassab and Dalal Abdulrahim. Sara Aali continued her fine scoring form with the goal for Joga.

And Arsenal Yellow overcame the U16 National Team 5-3 with two-goals from Rama Salem on the score-sheet alongside Nada Alsaeed, Tamara Kawash and Lamees Saqqa. The spirited Nationals fought back with two late goals by Rose Fayez and one from Amira Sowar but it wasn’t enough.

Arsenal Red sits proudly on top of the table with 7 points, closely followed by Eastern Flames and Arsenal Yellow on 6 points each.

RCSI take to the pitch on February 14 after delaying their start due to exams.
