Gulf Weekly Royal Golf Club dominates in annual battle

The Royal Golf Club’s members continued their dominance of the annual Royal Golf Club versus Awali Golf Club battle with a convincing 10½ – 1½ victory over their neighbours. This win followed their equally impressive 13 – 1 win in 2012.

The annual event rotates between the two clubs – Awali’s sandy course with browns rather than greens and the Royal Golf Club (RGC)’s lush Colin Montgomerie-designed championship course.

This year the contest took place on the RGC in perfect conditions. There were impressive performances from its members Charles Lyon, Todd Gillespie, Andy Wieser and Rajinder Sachdeva, who all contributed to the club’s winning margin.

A prize-giving ceremony was held after the match at Awali Golf Club, which boasts the oldest golf course in the Middle East, and has been celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

RGC Lady Vice Captain Dena Wales thanked both teams for their participation. “We’ve had a great day and I’d like to thank the Royal Golf Club for hosting the match and Awali Golf Club for hosting the prize-giving and lunch,” she said. “We look forward to trying to retain the title for the fourth successive year in 2014!”

FROM June golfers can take advantage of the Royal Golf Club’s ‘summer deal’ on green fees. Book an 18-hole tee time for two players and the club will only charge for one - that’s right, two players for the price of one!

“We’ll even help you keep cool by providing iced water and cold towels on your golf cart,” a club spokesman added.

Book a 2-for-1 tee time by calling 17750777.

Terms & Conditions are
*Offer valid any day from June 1 to September 15 at any time subject to tee time availability.
*Valid on 18 hole bookings on the Montgomerie championship course only.
