Disney has revealed plans for a new animated series set in the Star Wars universe.
According to DigitalSpy, Star Wars Rebels has begun production, with a premiere date scheduled for autumn next year. A one-hour special will launch on the Disney Channel, followed by a new series on Disney XD channels worldwide.
Simon Kinberg, who was a screenwriter and producer for X-Men: First Class, will executive produce the series and will write the premiere episode.
The show will take place between Episode III and IV, an era of around two decades that has never been developed on-screen before.
That era is when the evil Empire is tightening its hold on the galaxy, while hunting the remaining Jedi and fighting a rebellion.
Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer for Disney Channels Worldwide said: “The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD’s viewers.”
