Gulf Weekly Write to the editor

Congratulations to the young performers who entertained us so superbly. More than 230 children from the Junior and Infant Schools participated in the recent St Christopher’s School Summer Concert which featured three choirs – Year 2 Choir, the Boys Choir and the Girls Choir, the Brass Ensemble, Strings, the Cello Ensemble, the Woodwind Ensemble, the School Orchestra as well as solo instrumentalists.

They delighted us all – a full audience of parents, staff and friends.

A proud parent, Saar.

The Rotary Club of Manama (RCM) devoted its weekly meeting recently to pay tribute to the memory of the late Hassan Tarradah. He had been a member of the RCM since 1970, giving the club 43 years of continuous and dedicated service.

Over 30 members of the RCM and five members of Mr Tarradah’s family gathered at the Gulf Hotel to honour his achievements and to remember the love of life and the generosity spirit that he brought to everything he did.

RCM Past President Hussain Tadayon led the eulogies, reminding the assembly that Mr Tarradah had been born in 1923, started his career at Bapco aged 16, leaving 30 years later as their company’s most respected safety officer to join the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to set up its Safety Department. He later set up his own safety consulting business. But he was a man of many parts and was a leading member of 10 societies, some of which he founded. He was also the founder of the Dilmun School in Adliya, which he established in 1976.

Catherine Robinson, the current principal at the school, gave a very moving tribute to Mr Tarradah and her personal memories of working with him. Another tribute was provided by Hassan Aloud, the administrative director of the Bahrain Health and Safety Society. His son, Ali, spoke emotionally and recounted memories of his father. Accolades from past ambassadors William Monroe (US) and Jamie Bowden (UK) were also read out.

The RCM, with a current membership of 60 men and women from all segments of Bahraini society, was founded in 1965 with the purpose of raising funds for and giving support to community projects in the kingdom and abroad. Bahrain’s children with diabetes, The Bahrain Cancer Society, The Child Protection Centre, the Deaf & Mute Society and Al Rahma Centre are recent beneficiaries.

With the motto ‘Service above Self’, the RCM is a part of a world-wide organisation with over 1.2 million members.

Robert Timmers, President,  Rotary Club of Manama.
