The harvest festival of the south Indian state of Kerala and the visit of its folkloric king Mahabali will be marked by a four-day celebration at the Indian Club from September 24-27.
The first will feature a traditional flower display contest ‘pookkala malsaram’ with prize money of $1,000 on offer and a tug-of-war challenge; September 25 will see the traditional dance contest Thiruvathirakali with prize money of $1,000 on offer as well as Onam games for the whole family.
On the third day there will be a traditional ‘ultsava parambu’ – a traditional Kerala village market with stalls of food, games and accessories. Well-known south Indian folk singer Pranavam Sasi and his team are being flown in for the occasion.

Nissan Middle East is offering young artists the opportunity to showcase their talent at the launch of its next new car.
Those with the flair, creativity and expertise to be selected will have the chance to kick-start their careers by creating original artwork ‘live’ in front of hundreds of spectators in September this year, offering the possibility of being discovered by the region’s artistic community.
These masterpieces will then be displayed at subsequent exhibitions to which thousands more visitors are expected to attend.
Syed Ahmed, director, marketing, Nissan Middle East, said: “We expect this initiative will exchange and develop artistic ideas and experiences across the region. It is a competition that will bring to light as yet undiscovered talent in the Middle East, and will encourage and expand the understanding of art by everyone. It will also give young artists a chance to shine and become known for their skills.”
Five inspirational artists will be chosen from Bahrain, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Jordan and Lebanon with events taking place simultaneously across the Middle East.
Eligible to entrants who are amateur or aspiring (not professional) artists, aged between 18 and 24, participants will be chosen after the artwork is evaluated and shortlisted. The competition is open to all artists of various styles.
