Awali Golf Club’s first 18-hole competition of the season was held last Saturday with a strong field eager to take on the lingering summer conditions that caused some sensitive souls to not make it round all 18 of them.
New-kid-on-the-AGC-block Bill Scarth took the honours with 40 points, just clear of runner-up Keith Roberts on 39, followed by Ali Musbah and Martyn Wharrie on 38 points completing the prize winners, leaving a dejected Paul Beaumont out on countback.
Not only has Scarth only just received his handicap at AGC, but he has also already volunteered to serve on the club’s committee.
His win was additionally noteworthy as this was his first 18-hole competition following practice during recent months.
To the applause of the crowd, Captain Steve Brown tried his best to subdue Scarth’s buoyant demeanour by handing him a 2-shot handicap cut along with the first prize.
