THE seventh season of the GulfWeekly-sponsored Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain Ladies League kicked off in windy conditions which the competing teams found more problematic than the introduction of new offside and goalkeeper distribution rules.
Last season’s double winners Venus Envy’s match against Season 5 double winners Eastern Flames was a predictably cagey encounter and was only settled by a deflected free kick from Leah Montenegro in the last 10 minutes for Flames.
There then followed a period of intense pressure from Venus, but despite some good chances, including a great shot from Tala Bashimi that rattled the crossbar, they could not reply, leaving Flames with three early points.
Earlier, the first goal of the new season came from the penalty spot following a handball in the clash between Joga TFA and Seef Dental, formerly known as Desert Divas.
Alaa Al Darazi scored for Joga and despite the early setback the Seef girls rallied and scored a brace of goals of their own before half time, through Mollie Bednarowski and Mandy Ritchey.
The second half, though, belonged to Joga who took full advantage of the gale blowing behind them, scoring five. A hat-trick for Sara Aali and one-a-piece for Kholood Al Ghazara and Sara Aldaen made it 6-2 despite heroic efforts in goal by Seef Dental’s keeper Camille Jones who will be hoping the side fills the gaps in defence by the next game.
The league resumes tonight with clashes between Seef Dental and Arsenal U21s and Arsenal Ladies against the Flames.
