The Volvo Golf Champions, The European Tour’s season-opening ‘Tournament of Champions’, will return for the second consecutive year to the Durban Country Club in South Africa, from January 9-12, with an increased prize fund to be announced next month.

A limited-field event with no halfway cut, the Volvo Golf Champions is open only to European Tour players who have won an event on the previous year’s International Schedule, the only exception being current Tour Members with more than 10 European Tour victories.

The inaugural tournament was held in Bahrain and the second was set to launch the European Tour season at the Royal Golf Club until the organisers moved it to South Africa because of the unrest.

The competition now tends to attract leading South African players who are on holiday back home, rather than the global stars of the sport. The Bahrain event was won by England’s Paul Casey and subsequent ones went to South Africa’s Branden Grace and Louis Oosthuizen.
