Connoisseurs of fine food were treated to a dazzling array of French gastronomy by visiting Michelin Star Chef Gilles Choukroun at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, writes Stan Szecowka.

He enthralled diners and kitchen colleagues with his colourful techniques and original display of dishes.

Chef Gilles, who has dedicated his Paris MBC restaurant to mint, basil and coriander, offered his creations to a small gathering of fine dining enthusiasts and started off his short stay in the kingdom … with a crème brulèe starter!

It featured warm duck liver and crunchy roasted peanuts and worked a treat!

He admitted: “When I first introduced it to the menu, people thought I was crazy but in my head I knew the combination of flavours would come together sensationally!

“Many thought that you could not mix a popular ingredient like peanuts with a luxurious product such as duck but I proved them wrong.”

The principal plate featured a sea bass fillet and confit of sardines with semolina, asparagus spears and tomato jam which proved popular in the ambiance of the La Mer Seafood Restaurant.

His dessert was a crunchy, bitter sweet citrus dish with a distinguishable bite.

Chef Gilles visited Bahrain on the invitation of his friend Sami Boukhaled, Sofitel’s GM. He was only here for half-a-week and Sami needs to encourage him to fly back for a longer stay!
