FAULTY Towers – the Dining Experience – is returning to the kingdom with aplomb for a series of shows, kicking off with a charity fundraiser at the British Embassy.
The black tie charity dinner on November 20 is being held under the patronage of British Ambassador to Bahrain, Iain Lindsay, in support of the RIA Institute, a facility that helps children with learning difficulties.
Ambassador Lindsay, an avid Fawlty Towers fan, said: “I grew up watching the antics of Fawlty Towers on television but I never imagined I’d have the chance to have Basil and his team from Faulty Towers serve dinner in my garden. I am delighted that the British Embassy is able to support RIA’s splendid work for children with special learning needs by hosting a fun and, I’m sure, memorable evening of poor food and bad service.”
The experience is an ad-libbed, loosely-scripted tribute to the iconic UK TV series that followed the adventures of Basil Fawlty, a misanthropic hotelier with a penchant for losing his temper, often with his dim-witted Spanish waiter, Manuel, much to the dismay of his bossy wife Sybil.
Back in Blighty, there are few TV comedy shows more revered than Fawlty Towers, a testament to its comedic genius considering only 12 episodes were ever made.
Fans of the iconic TV sitcom are promised a nostalgic trip down memory lane with lots of laughs and those who are unfamiliar with the show will be offered a glimpse at the best of British comedy.
Mark Dranse, Punchline Media, said: “We hosted a few nights at short notice last November and the reception the show received was incredible. It’s rare to see such an innovative and novel concept in Bahrain, and every audience loved it. With a more experienced cast for 2013, we’re already receiving a lot of interest, and anticipate a sell-out every day!”
Since last year’s Manama debut, the show has just kept on growing: it now features eight teams of cast who between them have been touring over 20 countries, appearing at all the major arts festivals, maintaining a London West residency, and even fitting in a season at Sydney Opera House.
Public shows in Bahrain will begin on November 21 at the Regency InterContinental Hotel. There will be one show at the Dilmun Club on December 1, with other dates to be announced.
Public shows are BD30 and the event at the embassy is a minimum donation of BD50. A portion of proceeds from all shows will be given to RIA (in addition to all proceeds from the embassy show).
