Bahrain Rugby Football Club’s (RFC) first XV got off to a flying start in the Gulf Top Six over the weekend as they secured a bonus point victory away from home against newcomers Abu Dhabi Saracens.
After a break of over two months without a competitive fixture, the visitors were welcomed back with a bang as the Saracens, playing their first game at the top table of Gulf Rugby and the first in their history against Bahrain, started with a flourish.
With their sizable pack in dominant mood, the home side scored three tries in the first half, in addition to a penalty and a conversion, but Bahrain kept in touch thanks to a try of their own from Rich Wilkinson and eight points from the boot of Adam Wallace.
Crucially, Bahrain enjoyed a much better start to the second half and they drew level just four minutes in when Ollie Hunt crossed for a well-worked try after some nice interplay from Tom Ham and Rich Muncaster.
Bahrain took the lead ten minutes later when Shane Stapleton spotted an overlap on the right and great hands from Hunt put Paul O’Meara over in the corner.
Wallace added another penalty on 70 minutes to give his side some breathing space and the number eight Tom Jankowski secured the bonus point with a great finish in the dying minutes, with Caleb Anderson and Stapleton again involved.
Next up for Bahrain is the daunting challenge of reigning champions and heavy favourites Jebel Ali Dragons, who travel to Janabiya for a 1pm kick-off on Friday.
