Be cautious of ingredients

When you are in the supermarket, how do you know that the products you’re buying are healthy?

Most people will turn the product to the side and look at the health information without knowing what to look for. We are not just looking at calories and fat content; we need to be looking at other things as well.

In particular, we need to be looking at the list of ingredients. We need to make sure that the list does not contain any unhealthy items.

Let me give you an example, if you’re looking at two types of juice. One has added sugar and the other one doesn’t. Which would you choose?

Another example, there’s a flavour enhancer called MSG (mono-sodium glutamate). This is an artificial flavour enhancer that is harmful to health and can cause health problems for many people including headaches in adults and hyperactivity in kids.

You find this flavour enhancer in a lot of ready-made foods such as instant soups and dressings, and even in chicken stock cubes.  Make sure you steer away from products that contain that.

Also, what you need to be looking at is the size of the ingredients list. The smaller the list, the better it is for you. If the ingredients list contains things you don’t recognise or can’t pronounce, then don’t buy the product!

At the end of the day, it is the smart consumer who will reach optimum health faster.
