With the seasonal conditions continuing to be excellent for golf, last weekend saw the running of the Hempel Pairs two-day event at Awali Golf Club.

Each format was for a two-person team. Day one being a Greensomes format where the team’s best tee-shot was chosen, then that ball played by each player alternately, whilst day two was of a four-ball better ball format where the better of the two players’ scores on each hole became the team score for that hole.

With sponsorship from Hempel Paints and now in its 26th year, the competition was slightly different from previous years in that the main prizes were presented for each day’s play, rather than the combined result for both days.

Hempel Paints sales manager Benny Matthew presented the prizes. After Friday’s play, Jeffrey Barrett and Nathan Prince were at the top of the leaderboard coming in with a nett-65 and a little assistance from the rule book, as in runner-up place was the team of Paul Anderson and Mark Hodgkinson losing on countback, and then Sultan Ahmed and Abdulla Al Ghatam also losing on count-back.

On Saturday, the day one winners were not in the prizes, being replaced with the winning team of Hamad Fares Al Qutami and Christian Trzebinski scoring an incredible nett-58, with Abdulrahman Amin and Ateeq Mujali in runner-up position with nett-63, Dave Spittal and Martyn Wharrie making it into third place with nett-64.

The prize-giving ended with the final prize for best combined score for both days: Hamad Fares Al Qutami and Christian Trzebinski bagged that as well.
