He may be only one half of a legendary cockney duo but pianist Chas Hodges remains the master of ‘knees-up music’ even at the grand old age of 70.

He took the Dilly faithful through a nostalgic journey of rock-ney classics which had them stepping out on the dance floor and singing along as a united table and chair choir.

The former Chas & Dave hit-maker and TV regular continues to tour under the name of Chas And His Band and is still playing those favourite hits including Rabbit, Ain’t No Pleasing You, Sideboard Song, Margate, London Girls, Snooker Loopy with a rock ’n’ roll medley thrown in for good measure.

Now touring with son Nick on drums and Joe Juniper on bass he remains as personable as they come, chatting with members, having his photo taken with them, signing autographs, happy to open the club’s new refurbished Amigos Restaurant and willing to try out the new gaming station and take instructions from the kids.

Chas even had the chance to meet Dave, not his old playmate but another cockney rebel living in the kingdom - National Motors’ GM sales manager David Lord.

Earlier the Dilly management had sent out an apology because Eric Clapton had declined a polite request and could not make the club’s anniversary fun day on Friday. Even the promise of a Dilly full English was apparently not quite enough to tempt him.

Never mind, you Gertcha a real star in Chas. A great night was had by all and here’s to the next 40 years!
