‘Drive for show, putt for dough’ is one of golf’s most famous sayings and may be true for the professionals playing for the top cash prizes.
Putting is very important but as everyone will know if you do not keep your tee shot in play the game becomes very difficult, especially on a course such as The Royal Golf Club.
The basic swing is the same as with all of the other clubs, but we want a shallower angle of attack with a driver than we do an iron. To create this the setup must be different. Below are some tips on how to hit the driver more consistently.
For a right handed golfer:
Ball position just inside left heel
Right shoulder lower than left shoulder
Weight slightly more on right side
Turn, don’t sway (back and through)
Swing the club shallow (low) through impact
I feel the strongest part of my game is driving, I don’t over-think the shot but I do make sure I take the club away slowly and with good ‘width’.
At impact try to hit the ball like a tennis player hits a ‘forehand shot’, down the line the racket travels upwards when hitting the ball
It is vital to tee the ball at a good height so don’t be reluctant to tee it up high. The only reason you will sky the ball is if you swing steeply into impact.
Remember to get your basics right before you swing the club such as alignment and grip and you’ll soon drive the ball longer and straighter.
