Year 6 pupils from Nadeen International School were treated to a glimpse behind the curtain of making a movie as the curtains closed on the New York Institute of Technology (NYiT) experience in Bahrain.

Dead Sands, a film project by NYiT students in conjunction with Bahrain-based production house FANtasy Features, was the first zombie movie to be set in the kingdom.

The plot follows seven strangers who are brought together by chance in the wake of a viral outbreak in the kingdom, which turns those infected into blood-thirsty maniacs. The protagonists must not only survive but deal with their own differences and prejudices.

The young drama students, aged 10-11, were shown selected clips of the film and then told about the various different aspects of work that go into making a movie including sound, lighting, storyboards, directing and of course, acting.

NYIT campus dean / local president, Suzanne White, said: “The clips we showed the children were appropriate and had been carefully reviewed; there was nothing scary or inappropriate for their age group.

“When kids see movies they assume they’re all million dollar productions but we tried to explain you don’t necessarily need a big budget to make a good film.

“There are so many different opportunities behind the scenes. Kids usually only see what their parents do and sometimes don’t get to see the more creative and interesting jobs out there and that’s one of the reasons we invited the kids to NYIT.
