When I first started switching to healthy food I was told to eat lots of beans and pulses. So I bought chickpeas, fava beans, and different pulses – but they were all canned.
It was only much later I discovered the effect that canned food can have on health and it wasn’t good news.
Sometimes metal from the can makes it into the food, therefore into our body when we eat it. And of course it’s harmful to health.
The amount of metal in the food increases if the food inside the can is acidic such as tomatoes for example, because it reacts more to the metal.
Also, because canned foods are made to last a long time, most of them also contain preservatives and additives that we don’t want in our bodies.
Before you get rid of canned foods that you have in the kitchen, prepare the alternatives.
Canned tomatoes can be replaced with fresh tomatoes or tomato puree stored in cartons.
Canned beans and pulses can be replaced with freshly cooked beans and pulses or we can cook a bigger amount and store single portions in the freezer for later use. Easy and home-made.
When it comes to healthy food, it pays off to take the extra step.
