Gulf Weekly Club opens cool new outlet

The BRITISH Club of Bahrain has opened a new outlet for members to relax, enjoy a quick bite and socialise, following an impressive revamp of its coffee shop.

Outside Inn aims to offer club members the chance to make the most of the cooler months of the year by dining al fresco on the new terrace. And it boasts a new menu packed with old favourites and fresh ideas.

David Endall, the British Club of Bahrain’s general manager, said: “Outside Inn is a restaurant with a coffee shop feel to it. The menu is simple, we’ve kept the classics, full English breakfast but we’ve added sandwiches, Panini’s, rolls, toasties and salads.

“It’s taken just over two months to renovate the space and so far we’re all very pleased with the outcome.

“Prior to the refurbishment, this was the old coffee shop and with all due respect, it was very 1970s, very dark, very uninviting and so the transformation is fantastic … and then to expand it into next door, which was the John Clark Lounge, now it’s just one big space.

“Also, as the name suggests, we’ve now moved outside too, with our new terrace which we will no doubt be using a lot as the weather begins to cool down.”

David, 53, from Um Al Hassam, says the outlet’s name was picked by club member John Smith who was sadly unable to attend the opening as he is battling cancer back in the UK.

He said: “John is an avid golfer and a good friend to a lot of people and a very good friend of the chairman, and we are all very sad that he’s had to leave because of his illness.”

David describes the revamp as an ‘evolution’ for the club, and hopes that this first in a series of initiatives will help the club reclaim its reputation as the best social club in the world.

“In 2010 we were voted best expat club in the world and we want to get that title again, we want to be Number One,” he explained. “It’s a great place, and this new outlet should give us a boost and there are more projects to follow … watch this space!”

The club’s chairman, Andrew Savage, remains tight-lipped about the cost of the renovation but claims it was ‘money well spent’.
