The Arsenal U21s have got back to winning ways with a hard-earned victory over gritty Seef Dental.
Although lying bottom of the GulfWeekly Ladies Football League, all Seef Dental’s games have been close affairs. But the U21s were determined to stop their run of two consecutive defeats, and had a full quota of players to choose from with stars back after a number had been involved in international call-ups.
Starting the game well, Arsenal U21s’ prolific striker and top scorer Phoebe License opened her account in the first half.
Seef Dental remained as resilient as ever, though, and soon equalised through Sara Jalal.
But Latifa Al Khalifa restored the youngsters’ lead before half time and a cushion was provided by a great headed License second goal from a corner.
The second half was goalless, so ensuring that the U21s took all three points to go back to second spot in the League.
Current leaders Arsenal Ladies took on the much-improved RCSI team, another side that has improved beyond measure since the beginning of the season through playing in this competitive tournament.
The match burst into life through a fantastic Eleni Tsappis shot that would be worthy of any ‘Goal of the Season’ competition, but the RCSI girls kept playing good passing football and got to half time without any further damage. A sustained period of pressure from the Arsenal Ladies in the second half saw them break the RCSI resistance with three goals in five minutes, one an own goal and two from Sam Rule, one a great headed effort from a throw-in.
This week sees RCSI play Venus who will be trying to snatch second place back, while Seef Dental are up against the Arsenal Ladies.
With only four weeks to go in this season, every point will be vital to decide the destination of the coveted GulfWeekly Ladies Football League Trophy.
