One of the most delicious traditional Bahraini dishes is the Rangeena. It is usually made with fresh ripe dates and covered in cooked flour.
Many people enjoy the taste but not the health side-effects. The flour in it is made of wheat which means the gluten in it can cause digestive issues for many. And the oil used is usually animal-based or even corn-based which means it’s not ideal for health.
But the main ingredient, the fresh dates, are healthy. So why not make the whole dish healthy?
First, heat some coconut oil on the stove. Coconut oil is better to use because it’s plant-based and has many benefits; and also because it’s chemical structure is strong so it does not get affected when exposed to heat.
Then add buckwheat flour to the oil. And keep stirring on low heat. At this point, you can also add cardamom or any spices that you like.
Why buckwheat flour? Because it is naturally gluten-free and healthy. And at the same time, it’s texture works well for a dish of this type.
And lastly, arrange the ripe fresh dates (removing pits is optional) in a small plate so that they are all standing one next to the other. And pour the warm flour mixture evenly on top of the dates. Serve with a sprinkle of chopped nuts or coconut powder.
That’s your healthy Rangeena with all the taste minus the side-effects.
