Gulf Weekly Try pumpkin soup for breakfast

I’m going to make a crazy suggestion. I’m going to suggest that you have soup for breakfast! Yes, you read this correctly.

Why soup for breakfast? I realised that I’m always advising people in Ramadan to have soup when breaking their fast, and breakfast is exactly that. We wake up after a long fast and we have to pay close attention to what we eat at that time.

Because the body is in a state of stillness during sleep, it is important for breakfast to be gentle and nourishing. One of the best breakfast options is therefore a warm soup. Soup warms the body, heals the digestive system and prepares it for the meals to come, and nourishes the body without overloading it.

So my suggestion this week is pumpkin soup for breakfast. Pumpkins contain many antioxidants so they’re great for boosting immunity. They contain B vitamins, which means they give us energy and vitality. And the best part is that pumpkins are filling so you don’t leave the table feeling deprived and you don’t overeat at the next meal.

Even if you’re not great in the kitchen, you can still make a simple pumpkin soup. Cut the pumpkin into smaller pieces and steam them with some potatoes. Then in a separate pan, brown some chopped onions and add them to the steamed vegetables. Blend everything in the blender by adding the water from the steaming (or adding more water as needed), then add sea salt, pepper and any condiments you like as needed.

Heat and add some crushed garlic before serving (optional) or even a bit of ginger to give it a winter kick. Enjoy.
