The Williams driver lost control while navigating the

piscine chicane to slam into a wall, leaving his car

mangled with 18 laps left in the race.

Rosberg, a Monaco resident, jumped out immediately, but the severity of the crash – which saw the 22-year-old German’s car bounced between walls like a pinball – necessitated precaution.

“He had been very fast around here all weekend, so he will be really frustrated to come away with nothing,” Williams technical director Sam Michael said.

 

Williams race for 600th time

Frank Williams downplayed celebrations for his 600th Grand Prix at Monaco on Sunday. Rookie driver Kazuki Nakajima gave Williams a seventh-place finish at the rain-drenched circuit, but it still wasn’t enough.

“Reaching 600 ... means very little to me,” the Williams

team principal said. “There have been some brilliant

moments over the 40 years that I’ve been racing and there have also been some moments of great sadness. Most of the time it has been a most pleasurable experience.”

The British team’s F1 debut came at Argentina in 1973 but it registered its first of 113 victories six years later at the British GP. Williams trails Ferrari (764) and McLaren (636) in races entered, but is second only to Ferrari’s 15 constructors’ titles with nine – one more than McLaren.

Damon Hill was one of seven world champions to drive for the 66-year-old Williams. “I see Frank as a kind of monarch. Williams is the army, Patrick (Head) is his general and he fights the firebreathing Ferrari dragon for England,” the 1996 champion said.

Keke Rosberg, world champion with the team in 1982, said Williams was of a dying breed.

The Force is not with Sutil

With one touch of the brakes, Kimi Raikkonen destroyed Adrian Sutil’s Monaco GP. Raikkonen hit the breaks on Sunday and lost control as his Ferrari car wildly launched into the back of Sutil.

The accident forced both drivers to pit, with Sutil retiring due to a suspension problem. Raikkonen had to replace his front wing for the second time, but continued to finish out of the points in ninth place.

Sutil, who was only three laps away from a fourth-place finish for the pointless rookie Force India team, said he was already trying to forget one of his best races to date. “I have to go on, I have no other choice,” the 25-year-old German said. “But in the next week, I’ll think about it, be very sad about it. I just have to look for the next race and take the next chance.” Raikkonen apologised, but that did little to ease the disappointment following another strong performance in wet weather at the street circuit.
