Recruitment for the ‘MarsOne’ expedition may have closed but don’t feel too disappointed because you can still feel ‘out of this world’ in the latest inter-galactic trends hitting the runways.
The first step for mankind into the universe of ‘space age’ fashion was in the early 1960s with the help of André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne introducing a range of uni-sex high-tech fabrics that were sleek and minimalist. Metals, plastics and cosmic looks were a fascination due to the science fiction films of the time echoing the strange unknown and the big race into space.
As we know in the fashion world history repeats itself and we can now welcome the time warp of androgynous futuristic pieces. However, as we get closer to finding out more about the universe we take on graphic prints of modern snap shots of galaxy swirls and far-away moons and stars.
Watch for metallic shine, edgy cuts, patent leather, close to skin boots and iridescent flashes of a whole spectrum of colour like Marc by Marc Jacobs and Dries Van Noten used for autumn/winter 2015.
Black holes and dark matter are still just as ‘unexplained’ as how designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli pulled off Valentino’s pre-fall 2015 collection. This ‘big bang’ of whimsical couture is affixed with moons, stars and planets with a modern twist of ‘mod’ and ethereal elements.
Early on in Milan this year, Versace showcased a younger space age feel with its spring/summer pieces using laser-cut boxy shapes in material that resembled sugar sparkles in orange, baby blue, white, red, candy-floss pink and black spaced with sheer panels bringing a fun happy-go vibe.
Expect designers to keep recreating celestial sky-scapes in fantastic fabrics and holographic surfaces using shiny sequin embellishments that keep reminding us we are all part of this great big universe.
If you want to get in on this Milky Way trend and don’t want to alienate yourself, pick up space-dyed leggings and pair it with a solid piece on top or paint your nails with galaxy swirls and accessorise with solid metal pieces.
