There have been some testing times for Samsung’s smartphone section recently, but the South Korean giant is hoping that its latest mobile devices will kick-start a revival of good fortune as they were launched with great fanfare in recent days in Bahrain.
Profits at the company have been in decline for seven straight quarters, so bosses are putting faith in the new Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 to be smash hits in order to put them back on the path towards profit.
Techies and critics have been lavishing praise at the products. One described it as ‘the best Android device released yet’ and Fortune magazine’s Jason Cipriani added: “These devices just might be what Samsung’s looking for.”
The two new offerings are similarly priced to the Galaxy S6 series, but have larger displays and upgraded specs. Boasting a 5.7-inch screen compared to the S6’s 5.1 inches, and 4GB of RAM from 3GB, the aggressive strategy is aimed at wooing customers with a more advanced machine without hitting them in the wallet.
In terms of the two devices, the S6 Edge+ is ideal for those who like to watch videos and play games on their phone thanks to the immersive experience delivered by its curved display.
Meanwhile, the Note 5, as expected, is aimed directly at those who want a ‘phablet’ – a mash-up of a smartphone and a tablet – and comes with a stylus for ease of use when noting things down or navigating the various menus.
Storage options are either 32 or 64GB for both devices and for the first time for a Samsung device, both come with built-in batteries as opposed to removable ones.
As for the camera, both devices have a rear-facing camera packing 16-megapixels with an LED flash, optical image stabilisation, ISO and auto-focus alongside a five-megapixel front-facing camera.
