BOOK OF THE WEEK with Linda Jennings. Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, Harriet Castor, ISBN 9781783121588 (Carlton), BD8.400 for Gulf Weekly Book Club members

This has to be, without doubt, the most charming 150th anniversary edition of a novelty book of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The padded jacket is marked ‘OPEN ME for curiouser and curiouser surprises’ and the promise is more than fulfilled inside this wonderful gift book.

We all know the story... Young Alice dozes on a warm afternoon on the river bank only to see a white rabbit with a pocket watch rushing down a rabbit hole. Alice follows and enters the magical world of Wonderland.

However, this edition contains a Guide to Wonderland mini-book, an interactive rabbit-hole with flaps to open, a ‘slider’ showing Alice growing and shrinking and a stunning pop-up of Alice surrounded by playing cards (just to name a few of the special features).

With striking illustrations by Zdenko Basic it would be a gift to be treasured by anyone over the age of eight.

Read it now in paperback
You Are Dead, Peter James, ISBN 9781447255796 (Panmacmillan), BD4.500 for Gulf Weekly Book Club members

You are Dead is the 11th thrilling crime novel in Peter James’ Roy Grace series. Each book can be read though as a stand-alone novel.

‘They were marked for death’. The last words Jamie Ball hears from his fiancée, Logan Somerville, are in a terrified mobile phone call.

She has just driven into the underground car park beneath the block of flats where they live in Brighton. Then she screams and the phone goes dead. The police are on the scene within minutes, but Logan has vanished, leaving behind her neatly-parked car and mobile phone.

That same afternoon, workmen digging up a park in another part of the city, unearth the remains of a woman in her early twenties, who has been dead for 30 years.

At first, to Roy Grace and his team, these two events seem totally unconnected. But then another young woman in Brighton goes missing – and yet another body from the past surfaces.

Meanwhile, an eminent London psychiatrist meets with a man who claims to know information about Logan. And Roy Grace has the chilling realisation that this information holds the key to both the past and present crimes. Does Brighton have its first serial killer in over 80 years?
