Gulf Weekly Pereira’s team doubles up for victory

With two hard-fought doubles victories, the team led by Cassius Pereira overcame Ronaldo Anacin’s team to win the final of The Indian Club BFC Secretary Cup 2016. The two teams had qualified for the final of the newly-established team tennis event by coming through a round-robin group of four teams comprising five players each.

In the first match in the final was the pairing of Dr John Chacko and Somnath K for ‘Team Pereira’ against Vineeth Nair and Jacob Mathew from Anacin’s team. After sharing the first two sets – both at 6-4 – fortunes fluctuated throughout the super tie-break until Chacko and Somnath took the tie-breaker 10-8.

The two captains took to the court in the second doubles – Pereira pairing up with Ajith Bildani and Anacin playing with Ricson Rebello. With Bildani playing an inspired game, it was ‘Team Pereira’ that took a straight sets victory 6-4, 6-4.

The two doubles’ wins meant that Pereira’s team had built up an unassailable 2-0 lead, so the final singles rubber between Paritosh Palay from ‘Team Pereira’ and VV Mohan from ‘Team Anacin’ wasn’t played.

The Indian Club’s vice-president Ajith Madathil and treasurer Mahesh Kumar presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up.

The title sponsor of the event was BFC, supported by Omni Trading & Services and Berger Paints.
