Toyota has revealed its highly-anticipated 2016 Prius after a launch event was held at the E K Kanoo showroom in Sitra to reveal the fourth generation of the popular hybrid.

The latest model features the tag team of a powerful gasoline engine and an electric motor to offer the best of both worlds.

Ismail Akbar, executive general manager of sales, said: “The new Toyota Prius is set to wow drivers in Bahrain with its ground-breaking environmental performance, a bold new design and a fun-to-drive spirit. We will see more of Prius, the number one hybrid in the world, making a statement on the streets of the kingdom.

“With the recent fuel price increases and the cost of servicing rising, this innovative hybrid technology guarantees to save you more money and lower your maintenance costs while ensuring a quiet and pleasant ride. The new Prius is capable of 1,100 kilometres per tank, which can be filled with BD7.”

The engine is a 1.8-litre VVT-i with a maximum thermal efficiency of 40 per cent and can produce 97BHP, while the electric motor also produces 71BHP.

The BD9,900 Prius is a hybrid which can be driven completely on electrical power with zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions, or with a combination of the electric motor and gasoline engine depending on your driving behaviour.

The batteries are charged continuously when braking and decelerating, so you don’t need to plug in a power cord and it doesn’t require any special fuel, yet drives like any other conventional car.

A suite of safety features are present, such as the TNGA-based chassis optimised for excellent impact performance and an array of active and passive features like seven airbags to protect the driver and passengers, active front head restraints and Head-Up Display, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

The world’s best-selling hybrid, the latest version of the Prius comes standard with an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty and is offered with a free one year/20,000km service package.
