Question: Which treats should I choose for my dog?
Answer: Many are overwhelmed by the many choices of dog treats on the market. Eye-catching packaging and clever, fun shapes stand out on the shelves, but how do you choose?
The best way to pick the right treat for your pet is to look at the ingredients. Avoid treats with artificial colours, flavours and those containing fat and sugar.
If you read BHA and/or BHT in the ingredients, put the treat back on the shelf as these ingredients are chemical preservatives linked to cancer.
It is best to choose treats containing all natural ingredients and even better if they are low in calories. Also, look for treats that contain real meat, especially those with single-source proteins such as fish, lamb and chicken.
Keeping your pet happy and healthy begins with a balanced diet. Keep in mind that treats should account for no more than 10 per cent of your pet’s daily intake of food.
