Making a determined decision to start heading to the gym often feels torturous compared to watching football on the sofa and tucking into a bowl of crisps. However, we all have to keep our health in check and motivation can be found just by wearing the right fitness gear.

Here are a few tips when shopping for the essentials:
Look for a sleeveless T-shirt with modern technical materials that highlight the ability to keep you dry. Don’t show up wearing a skin-tight cotton tank-top thinking you are Arnold Schwarzenegger. Most of us are there to build muscle.

Look for some versatile shorts with lightweight smooth fabrics for breathability and comfort (see picture). These Under Armour shorts have a secure key pocket and an advanced moisture transport system to keep you cool, dry and comfortable. Keep away from wearing big baggy sweats to hide your extra pounds. They will be too bulky and get in the way of your workout and restrict movement.

Invest in a fitness tracker. My personal favourite is a ‘FitBit’ which keeps tabs on my heart rate, steps, distance, calories burned and even my sleep and wake timings.

Find the right athletic socks. Regular socks will not have the right material needed and will either be too bulky or thin. The ankle socks are best with quick-dry elements which avoid bacterial growth. Some even have imbedded arches for support.

Footwear is key for support and performance. This will be the most important purchase you make. Be sure to check with proper fitness brand shops which have helpful staff to measure your feet and the amount of arch support you need.

Jalal’s bonus tip: Keep your gym stuff ready packed by the door. Having it waiting will prevent those lazy excuses in your head.
