Sport lovers and kind-hearted spectators stepped out in unison at a hockey tournament organised to raise funds for two Indian states stricken by flooding.
In the aid of the relief effort for the flood victims in Kerala and Karnataka, the Hungry Hamours organised the fundraiser last weekend at the Royal Golf Club in Riffa.
Four teams took part; One Quarter Kerala, No Drinks, Hot Drinks and Cold Drinks, each made up of members of the main Hamours team plus some friends. More than 100 spectators turned up to support the initiative and watch Friday’s action.
In the end, One Quarter Kerala triumphed over No Drinks 2-0 in the final, thanks to two fine goals from Avalon Martin.
In addition to the tournament, there were other activities such as an auction and children’s hockey games. In total, BD500 was raised for the cause.
Hungry Hamours general secretary and event organiser, Jason D’Souza, was delighted with the turnout for the event. He said: “The fact that we are a very small community compared to other sports, yet still managed to get a good turnout at the last minute, is outstanding.
“People came together very quickly and from all walks of life. This is a major crisis back in India and the situation is changing and worsening every single day with the weather being so unpredictable.
“It’s a very noble cause and I’m hugely proud of everyone that played or came to support us. We had to do this now as quickly as possible, so I’m very grateful to the Royal Golf Club for doing a fantastic job of preparing the location for us and being great hosts.”
