Young footballers from across the kingdom took a shot at raising funds for breast cancer research and bagged hundreds of dinars for charity champions Think Pink Bahrain, writes Mai Al Khatib-Camille.

The Think Pink Football Tournament, which featured 10 teams made up of 11-and -12-year-olds, took place at the British School of Bahrain (BSB) in Hamala. It was organised by Al Aatah Legacy to raise awareness and support for the cause.

“We wanted to spread awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early screening, as well as to contribute to the Think Pink Bahrain Breast Cancer Society with the funds we raised,” said Fatema A. Rasool, Al Aatah Legacy’s secretary general.

Previously, the Legacy was the Fatima Bint Resq (FR) Project founded in May 2020 and directed by Shaikh Rashid bin Mohamed Al Khalifa in honour of his late grandmother Shaikha Fatima bint Resq bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa.

He is still the founder and chief executive officer and the vision of supporting the community continues to resonate with the group through a board of big-hearted individuals and volunteers.

“The aim of our registered, non-profit organisation is to support citizens, residents and Bahrain as a whole by creating projects or supporting different charities across the country,” added Fatema.

The football tournament included teams of 10 players from Ole Football Academy, BSB, Al Hekma School, MJD Sports, Target Academy, Lions Academy and PFA Academy.

Ole Black clinched the title while Ole Red came in second and the British School of Bahrain took third place.

As the matches took place, spectators enjoyed a small carnival set up in collaboration with Bubbles Events which included a series of activities such as basketball and darts.

There were food trucks and coffee and dessert stands as well, with a percentage from all sales donated towards the cause.

The fundraiser raised BD617.943 for Think Pink Bahrain and this will not be Al Aatah Legacy’s last initiative.

“This was our first charity sports event and we aim to raise more money in our upcoming activities,” added Fatema.

“We have worked on a number of fashion and art auctions as well in the past along with beach clean-ups, Iftar distributions, a student voice conference, in collaboration with BSB, distribution of tablets for families-in-need and more.

“We will be staging an event in December on the occasion of National Day which we will announce shortly on our Instagram page.”
