Batelco officially launched EasyPay, a first-of-its-kind mobile payment service, in partnership with Ithmaar Bank and Arab Financial Services (AFS), an electronic payments outsourcing service provider, at an event in Seef Mall.
The new service had been announced by the three organisations earlier last week following the signing of an MOU at the telecom company’s headquarters in Hamala.
It uses secure Near Field Communication (NFC) tags to eliminate the need for cash or cards by allowing customers to shop simply by tapping their mobile phones at the checkout counters of participating stores.
Guests at the launch event last Thursday were each given vouchers to test the new service at Costa Coffee, one of the participating brands. Currently 30 companies in Bahrain have signed up to make the service available to their customers.
To subscribe for the service, customers need to register for an Ithmaar Bank prepaid eCard at Seef Mall Batelco shop or Ithmaar Bank branches and receive their NFC tags, which can then be used at participating merchants.
