FORMER St Christopher’s School pupil Sam Hobday took the honours in the amateur division on eight over after closing with a 78 at last weekend’s Jo’burg City Masters at the Country Club Johannesburg to pick up his latest golfing trophy.
He powered ahead of Brazil’s Tiago Lobo, who hit the front on day one with a 73, failed to keep the momentum going, missing the cut on Wednesday after a second-round 78.
Next up is The Roar, the third and final co-sanctioned event on MENA Tour’s South Africa swing, which is being played at Waterkloof Golf Club in Pretoria and concludes tomorrow.
Hobday, who now sits proudly on top of the tour’s amateur Order of Merit, told GolfWeekly: “It’s always nice to pick up some silverware! I hit the ball pretty nicely over the three days but a couple of bad holes cost me the chance to finish higher up the leaderboard. But to be the leading amateur this week certainly gives me a lot of confidence going into this last event in South Africa.”
Hobday, 22, will compete in the English Amateur Championship during the summer, after which he will make the jump into professional golf.
