Bahrain-based group Masala Dosa Meetup is celebrating the launch of its second overseas chapter this month, writes Melissa Nazareth.
The first ever India edition in Muvattupuzha, Kerala, marks
the ensemble’s long-awaited debut in subcontinent – the birthplace of the
beloved masala dosa.
The fermented rice and lentil creation emerged from the
South Indian state of Karnataka in the 20th century but, overtime, has gained
admiration from foodies around the world.
Masala Dosa is a crispy crepe-like dish stuffed with spiced
potatoes and typically served with coconut chutney and sambar – a lentil and
vegetable stew. Variations like Spring Dosa, stuffed with Chinese stir-fried
noodles, and spinach dosa, a vibrant green, spinach-infused crepe, among others
are also served at some local restaurants.
The Kerala chapter’s inaugural gathering took place at Sree
Lakshmi Bhavan restaurant and drew more than 32 food lovers for an evening
celebrating South Indian culinary heritage and community.
The new group was formed after a wave of interest from local
masala dosa aficionados who, upon learning about the group’s success in
Bahrain, reached out to founder Keyem Thomez to request a local edition.
“I am thrilled to have attended the first meetup back home,”
Keyem told GulfWeekly.
“Seeing the group grow internationally has been one of the
joys of my life. Amid the global expansion, the Bahrain group remains
close-knit and united by their love for masala dosa,” remarked the ‘laughter
ambassador’, who promotes the practice of laughter as a form of well-being,
The Muvattupuzha chapter is the third global location for
Masala Dosa Meetup. The original group, established in Bahrain in June 2018, is
now in its eighth year and maintains an active membership of 45 food
enthusiasts from diverse nationalities who meet monthly on the last Saturday at
a selected restaurant.
A second chapter was introduced in Richmond, Virginia, USA,
in October 2019.
The dosa demolishers are hopeful to stage their next
gathering soon.
“Food brings people together in ways few other things can.
Our goal is simple: Meet, greet and eat — build friendships over something we
all love,” added Keyem.
