History buffs in Bahrain have a chance to discover the prehistoric roots of the world’s seas at a new exhibition which opened this week at the Bahrain National Museum and runs until March 16, 2020.

‘Dive into the Jurassic’ features immersive CGI films, original fossils and replica casts from the UK’s Natural History Museum’s unique marine fossil collection to bring the ancient seas to life. The exhibition takes visitors beneath the waves to meet whales, dolphins, turtles, pliosaurs and more that inhabited the oceans 200 million years ago.

Brad Irwin, head of International Partnerships at the Natural History Museum, added: “This is the first time many of these exhibits have left the UK. There are some incredible pieces and the best part is, visitors are encouraged to touch a lot of these, so they can get a real feel for prehistoric history.”

These types of interactions, from fossilised teeth to simulated fish scales along with multimedia displays, are what set Dive into the Jurassic apart from other exhibitions as it is a complete sensory experience. In addition, an educational programme designed by the Natural History Museum’s education team will kick off in the coming months.

Her Excellency Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, stated: “We are inaugurating this UK-based exhibition on the anniversary of the establishment of the Bahrain National Museum. This underscores the fact that culture-related efforts act as a bridge by which we can reach and engage others and foster dialogue.”
