Bahraini startup DocWhere, launched by Dr Nahla Al Sunni won the People’s Choice Award at the fourth edition of Pitch@Palace Global held last week in London, UK.
DocWhere is a mobile app that connects patients to private medical services (based on user reviews) to book appointments, order medication, have live consultations and access and share their medical reports.
Eighteen entrepreneurs from around the world qualified for the final stage of the competition after their local and regional rounds, including startups from the GCC who competed in Pitch@Palace GCC 2.0 in March and November 2019.
Dr Nahla, founder of DocWhere, said: “I am quite excited having won the People’s Choice Award globally, with the support of the Kingdom of Bahrain. This is an important step towards developing DocWhere. We plan on expanding our platform outside Bahrain, fulfilling DocWhere’s humanitarian role of bridging the gap between patients and doctors.”
In the lead up to the competition, a delegation of Bahraini entrepreneurs participated in a two day boot camp, which included a series of training workshops and specialised sessions introducing entrepreneurs to opportunities, challenges and frameworks of the global economy.
Pitch@Palace was founded by Prince Andrew, The Duke of York in 2014 to support entrepreneurs accelerate their business ideas by connecting some of the most innovative startup businesses in the world with potential investors, mentors and key business contacts.
More than 1,000 entrepreneurs from 60 plus countries have participated in the competition, consecutively creating 6000+ job opportunities around the world.
Dr Ebrahim Mohammed Janahi, chief executive at Tamkeen said: “This achievement does not come as a surprise considering the various support programs and opportunities offered to startups in Bahrain. Not to mention the business-friendly regulations that allow startups to grow and expand their operations, in addition to the numerous events that Bahrain hosts and participates in to celebrate and promote entrepreneurship across all sectors.”
Bahrain was among the top 10 performing countries from Europe and the Middle East to look out for in terms of FinTech. Bahrain ranks first globally in Islamic finance regulation in the Global Islamic Finance Report due to its standards on crowdfunding and open banking, in addition to being amongst the top 15 Global Ecosystem for Affordable Talent.
