With the kingdom fighting the coronavirus (Covid-19) and now making face masks compulsory in public spaces, people of all ages are finding ways to give back and safeguard the country against the virus and disease.

Sarah Ahsan Chishty has been using her pocket and birthday money, as well as her spare time at home, designing and creating face masks for those who might be unable to afford them.

The Year 8 student at St Christopher’s School came up with the idea after a discussion with her parents, Ahsan and Rabia, having watched the virus spread globally and wanting to find a way to contribute to the fight against it.

Sarah said: “I wanted to find a way to help those who needed it the most. I came up with the idea for facial masks since it was something I could design and create at home. I came up with a template utilising three layers of fine cotton and after some testing, started producing them using our sewing machine at home, creating 100 masks within three days.

“I also reached out to the Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS), whom I had worked with previously, to donate the masks.”

Sarah is now busy putting together another 200 to 250 masks to donate to the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital, as well as to her school, to ensure those most likely to be at the forefront of the fight have the right protection to do so. The masks are machine washable and reusable.

The thoughtful teenager is also putting together well-being kits comprised of hand sanitisers, tissues, Panadol boxes, herbal tea, tooth paste and more, into individual packs which she is donating to the MWPS and other organisations.
