Super sports car Automobili Lamborghini is racing to create surgical masks and protective plexiglass shields to support the people of Italy in their fight against Covid-19, writes Mai Al Khatib-Camille.

Departments within the car production plant, located in Sant’Agata Bolognese, which is a small comune in the metropolitan city of Bologna in the north of Italy, are being used to produce the masks and shields. The items will be donated to the Sant’Orsola-Malpighi Hospital in Bologna for the fight against Covid-19.

Stefano Domenicali, chairman and chief executive of Automobili Lamborghini, said: “During this emergency, we feel the need to make a concrete contribution. The S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital is an institution with which we have had a collaborative relationship with for years, through both professional consultancies in promoting programmess to protect our workers’ health, and in research projects. We will win this battle together by working in union, supporting those who are at the forefront of fighting this pandemic every day.”

Work on this solidarity initative is being carried out by personnel of the saddlery that produce the interiors and specialty customisation for Lamborghini cars. They will be producing 1,000 masks a day. They also aim to create 200 units a day of medical shields using 3D printers within the carbon fibre production plant and the Research and Development department.

The activity has been approved and supported by the Emilia-Romagna Region and is taking place in collaboration with the University of Bologna. The Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences will oversee validation testing of the medical devices made by Lamborghini, prior to their delivery to hospital.

Also, as a sign of unity and support for the entire nation, every evening Lamborghini lights up its headquarter with the colours of the Italian flag.
