BAHRAIN will stage part of the global ‘Nuit des Idées’ initiative tomorrow – for the first time.

The event, which translates to Night of Ideas, encompasses 24 hours of events all over the world, happening after the sun sets from Fiji, Japan to San Francisco, the US, via Korea, Bahrain, Israel, Bogota and more.

The event is an opportunity to better understand cutting-edge ideas and knowledge, while discussing major contemporary issues faced by citizens across the world.

From debates, conferences, theatres, performances and screenings to concerts, all sorts of events have been planned this year.

In Bahrain, the Bin Matar House in Muharraq will play host to a round table discussion, in English, tomorrow evening at 5.30pm.

Dr Elie Flouty from Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities; Ali Bazzaz, artist and writer; Océane Sailly, PhD candidate at Sorbonne University; Ali Karimi, architect; and Saïd Nourine from Alliance Française Bahrain (AFB) will share their ideas and thoughts on this year’s theme, ‘Closer.’

“This year’s theme has been chosen with the intent of questioning our individual and collective relationship to space, new forms of solidarity and the place of digital technology in our societies, which shapes our relationship to the world,” a spokesperson from the AFB told GulfWeekly.

“Whilst our modernity is characterised by an ever-increasing process of extending our access to the world, the theme philosophically poses the problem of what the ‘right distance’ to people and things may be.”

In light of the Covid-19 regulations, only 24 seats are available, based on a first-come, first-serve basis, with face masks and social distancing required for all.

Those unable to attend in person can tune in via Instagram Live.

In addition, a collection of letters written by a rising author each from Bahrain, Mexico, Zambia and Singapore will also be launched later in the evening, discussing “changes that new technologies represent in our relationship with others and society.”

These letters will be translated into French and published online.
