THE_world-class Bahrain International Marathon Relay returns to the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) on Friday for what promises to be the most prestigious event yet.

This year's annual charity sporting extravaganza, which raises funds for a variety of needy charities every year, gets underway at 10am.

The event consists of 16 legs of approximately three kilometers.

While the top 20 teams are serious runners and the top 10 teams will have many international runners, most teams enter purely for the fun of participating in the event. The favourites will undoubtedly be the Saad Track Club - an international running club managed by top UK coach Ian Wilson.

He said: "The relay has been a regular sporting event in Bahrain since 1981 when the Bahrain Defence Force took the honours in the inaugural event stage relay starting at the Sitra Causeway.

"Today it is an international running event, for athletes of all levels, regardless if they are novice or a world-class performers."
