THE hit television series The Big Bang Theory gave away a high-flying prize to a fan at the Comic-Con festivities in San Diego … a free trip to space.

The ticket for a flight aboard the XCOR Aerospace Lynx suborbital spacecraft was first offered to cast member on the CBS sitcom Simon Helberg, whose character Howard left on his own journey to space at the end of the fifth season. However, Helberg declined, leaving a lucky fan with the golden ticket.

The Big Bang Theory enthusiasts gathered for a panel discussion where Mercedes Becerra was picked from a pool of fans.

XCOR Aerospace announced on the social networking site, Twitter: “With our friends @BigBang_CBS, just gave a lucky fan a Lynx flight! Congrats Mercedes Becerra, you’re going to spaaaaaace! #WBSDCC. Becerra was identified as a resident of Paso Robles, California.

“We are so proud and grateful to be part of this adventure,” the show’s producer Chuck Lorre said. “The Big Bang Theory is boldly going where no sitcom has gone before!”

The two-seater space plane is designed to take passengers to the upper reaches of the atmosphere and will be able to take off and land on a conventional airport runway.

XCOR is aiming to begin space tourist flights aboard Lynx in 2013. Currently, tickets for the suborbital ride sell for $95,000 per person.

Warner Bros executive Lisa Gregorian said: “We’re so grateful to our fans for all their support and the love the show has received.

“We wanted to deliver something special and, as fans ourselves, we thought taking a trip to space would be amazing and literally out-of-this-world.”
