Gulf Weekly Write to the editor

With reference to the letter published last week from a movie buff/critic. I’d really like to respond as I thoroughly enjoy Kristian Harrison’s film reviews.

Dear Pauline in Manama,

Ref your Letter to the Editor last week - so Bad Moms is surely worthy of its number 7 IMDb status according to its reported takings of $8m? Please, do feel free to provide us with a 300-word synopsis of that little gem as it must surely be a blockbuster, according to your understanding of what makes a film a success.

I’m sure movie-loving Kristian would be delighted to sit back, relax for a spell and read your glowing review!

Michelle Page, by email.

In the lead up to the public holidays marking Eid Al Adha in September, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism is looking to visitors from Gulf countries to offset the recent slump in the nation’s tourist numbers.

Tourism is a critical source of Turkey’s GDP – the sector generated $35.1 billion in revenues in 2015 – but recent events have taken a toll on the sector. The ministry is therefore turning to visitors from the Gulf region for support, in particular visitors from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar, which have in the past represented the highest volume of visitors to the nation.

In spite of recent events, there are no security concerns in tourist destinations in Turkey. These facilities are, and will continue to be, completely safe.

Hospitality services remain undisrupted and the comfort of foreign citizens visiting the nation continues to be a priority to us.

Generally, the period from June to September marks a peak season for Gulf visitors travelling to Turkey.

The summer months are an excellent time for tourist destinations, and the inbound traffic creates numerous jobs.

We hope that the upcoming Eid Al Adha holidays will help boost tourist revenue. Especially, since the safety and comfort of tourists is being handled with the utmost care.

As per the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism created 580,000 jobs directly in 2014 in Turkey, which translates to 2.2 per cent of the nation’s total employment.

Attaché of Culture and Information from Turkey to the UAE.

Thank you so much for the piece you wrote on our foundry, headlined ‘Bronze beauties are flying high’ in last week’s issue. We really appreciate the time and effort you put into it and it truly came out beautifully.

It was great to read the news in last week’s issue about American Mission Hospital’s plans to open a new medical centre shortly in Saar.

In the decade that I have been living in Bahrain and used AMH facilities I have found the reception staff members helpful and efficient and the medical staff professional and caring.

As someone who has trouble with needles a special ‘thank you’ should go to the nurses who must think I’m a right Nancy as I sweat profusely and look ready to faint whenever I have to give a blood sample!

One last point, I hope they bring along the fish tank with them from the old clinic. I find it very calming and the kids love the fish too!

Trevor, British expat, Saar.
