Shoppers can now beat the summer heat every Saturday by joining Saar Mall’s fruity-fun festivities for the chance to win cool prizes.

Since the beginning of the month people have been flocking to the watermelon festival, called #Bateekh_bh in Arabic, to participate in a variety of activities.

They have included a live cooking programme with Bahraini chef Khawla Al Seeb, games and contests for children, a watermelon carving show and a weekly raffle draw at the food court.

Esmahan Hassan Bokhowa, the Saar Mall manager and the financial director of Bokhowa Group, who has been wearing her red and green fruity pride in the form of nail polish, said: “When people hear bateekh, which means watermelon in Arabic, everyone immediately thinks summer holidays and what better way to cool down during this humid heat than by biting into a refreshing slice of the juicy fruit?

“We wanted to create a fun atmosphere for the entire family to enjoy and the watermelon theme is a one-of-a-kind event. Many of our administrators and employers have been showing their support as well by dressing up in character.

“The shoppers love it because even if they only spend 100 fils at one of the outlets they are automatically entered into a raffle draw sponsored by Geant, Batelco, Yum Yum Tree, Natural Bites and EZ Burger.”

At 6pm, 200 lucky shoppers get to take home an array of prizes which have included Samsung Galaxy S7 phones, shopping vouchers and free meals.

Customers aren’t the only ones snapping up gifts as the mall’s 70 stores are getting into the celebratory swing by dolling up shop windows and outlets in the red and green watermelon theme too.

They have also been given complimentary melon-style pots and flowers to display by the management.

The best decorated store will win a trophy and certificate with the judges’ decision announced on Saturday, which also happens to be the last day for families and friends to join in the merriment.

And, starting tomorrow from 10am to 10pm, there will also be a three-day Big Shopping Festival at the food court featuring a bazaar-style souq, games for children and a special stone-carving show.

The event is being organised by The Bright Future Society, which supports 50 registered orphans, to raise funds.

Mall management has also invited 150 orphans from the Royal Charity Organisation and Al Sanabel Orphans Care to attend the festival.

They will receive free meals, gifts and a chance to participate in games and competitions.
