Gulf Weekly Golftip - Putting alignment

Alignment is just as important as your putting stroke. There are different methods to alignment and all can be as effective as each other.

The method I use is called ‘Spot Putting’. With this simple method you look down the line of the putt, but instead of choosing a target next to the hole or mid way, you aim for a point around one or two inches from the ball. Having a target so close to the ball makes it much easier to hit, giving you more confidence.

The steps to spot putting are:
1. Line up behind the ball, get down low to see the slopes and take note of the lie of the green.
2. Decide on your aim spot.
3. Take your normal set up and practice swings if necessary. Look at the hole a few times to get a feel for the distance, then trace back from the hole to your marked point.
4. The next important step is not to watch the ball but rather the point you have picked and make a smooth stroke.
